Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed the party’s expectation that the Indian government would immediately return Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, stating she should be brought to justice as she has been proved to be a ‘fascist’. “I would like to thank the UN fact-finding committee for their report as they have correctly stated that all the killings took place at the orders of one person, especially fascist Hasina,” he told a press briefing at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office here.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul emphasized that the genocide and human rights violations in Bangladesh occurred under Hasina’s directives. The UN report cited by Fakhrul revealed that the destruction of democracy and institutions took place at Hasina’s order. He expressed hope that the Indian government would facilitate Hasina’s return to Bangladesh for justice.

Earlier, British Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh James Goldman held an hour-long meeting with BNP Secretary General and the party’s Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid. Concurrently, the British High Commissioner Sarah Cook is scheduled to meet BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London, as noted by Mirza Fakhrul.

“Today’s meeting was pre-arranged; the Deputy High Commissioner came because the British High Commissioner was not there. We had routine discussions. They wanted to know about the current political situation, the steps taken by the interim government, and when the elections will be held,” Fakhrul stated.

Following the meeting, the BNP Secretary General spoke to journalists about Bangladesh’s relations with the UK. Fakhrul highlighted that enforced disappearances and killings affect the broader population of Bangladesh, not just a specific group.

He also addressed past allegations regarding Aynaghar, referencing a report by Al-Jazeera that was previously denied by the Awami League government. Fakhrul claimed that human rights were consciously violated by the Awami League government, which aimed to destroy democracy and the opposition party to maintain power.
