Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today demanded quick reforms for holding the next general elections to help form a ‘people’s government’. ‘We are going through an unusual time politically. Fascism has fallen but democracy has not emerged. The people’s aspirations and the formation of a people’s government have not yet been established,’ he said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul was addressing a workers’ rally in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office marking the May Day. BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the rally on a virtual platform as the chief guest with Sramik Dal president Anwar Hossain in the chair. BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Nazrul Islam Khan, along with BNP leaders Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Krishak Dal president Hasan Zafir Tuhin, Mohila Dal president Afroza Abbas, Jubo Dal president Abdul Monayem Munna, Swechchhasebak Dal president SM Jilani, and Sramik Dal Dhaka City South convener Sumon Bhuiyan, were among the speakers.
Mirza Fakhrul called on Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to complete the necessary reforms to hold the next general elections soon. He highlighted that BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was the first to realize the importance of workers’ rights, which led to the creation of new opportunities by opening garment factories and arranging for manpower export.
The BNP secretary general emphasized that any good work done for the workers has occurred when BNP was in power. He pointed out that workers sustain the entire civilization but do not receive fair wages, forcing children to work for a living instead of studying and playing. Fakhrul noted that despite advancements in modern machinery and changes in the production process, the fate of the working class remains unchanged.
