Dhaka: A total of 120 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have been cleared of charges in two legal cases filed at Shahbagh and Ramna Police Stations in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah recently issued orders accepting the final reports submitted by the police, thereby exempting the accused from the charges. Sub-inspector Jinnat Ali from the court’s general registration wing confirmed that 37 individuals, including Mirza Fakhrul, were named in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station, and 83 were implicated in the case by Ramna Model Police Station.
The Shahbagh Police Station case was filed on November 26, 2019, by Sub-inspector Md Motiur Rahman. The charges involved obstructing police duties and attempting to murder law enforcement officials. After thorough investigations, the police submitted a final report on October 28, leading to
the exemption of the accused. Other notable figures exempted in this case include Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Mirza Abbas, Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and Barrister Kaiser Kamal.
The second case, involving an attack on the Chief Justice’s residence, was filed on October 28, 2023. The Detective Branch (DB) of police also submitted a final report on the same date, resulting in the exemption of the accused. Apart from Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the prominent BNP members cleared in this case are Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Barkat Ullah Bulu, and Abdul Awal Mintoo.
