Dhaka: The long-awaited 60-feet link road in the capital's Mirpur area was formally opened to public traffic on Wednesday afternoon, marking the end of a 17-year construction process. The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) organized a program in Mirpur to celebrate the occasion, with Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb attending as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was presided over by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz and attended by senior officials from various departments and the DNCC. In his remarks, Taiyeb emphasized the symbolic importance of the road, stating that collaboration among government institutions can lead to significant improvements in urban living conditions. He highlighted the need to alleviate daily inconveniences for citizens to create a just city for all.
The DNCC Administrator commented on the efforts to address long-pending city projects, including the 60-feet link road, which had been stalled for 17 years. He mentioned the challenges involved in coordinating among several government departments but expressed satisfaction at completing the project within two months.
The initiative to construct the new link road aimed to ease persistent traffic congestion in Mirpur. Illegal structures were removed from specific plots, and land was acquired from the Postal Department to facilitate the project. The DNCC had previously announced the removal of encroachments and the opening of the road earlier this month.
The newly constructed road now provides a direct connection from the 60-feet road to the main Mirpur thoroughfare, eliminating the need for vehicles to navigate a narrow path and reducing traffic congestion. The new one-way lane allows vehicles from the 60-feet road to directly enter the main Mirpur road, offering a permanent solution to previous traffic issues.
