Dhaka:Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat has called on Airbus to expedite the delivery of at least one aircraft to Biman Bangladesh Airlines by 2028 to alleviate the national carrier's fleet shortage.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made this request during a ceremony at a city hotel, marking the signing of an agreement for the purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft. He emphasized the need for early delivery to meet growing passenger demand and support the country's economic progress through expanded air connectivity.

Biman currently transports approximately 20 percent of Bangladesh's air passengers. Millat highlighted the importance of the Airbus acquisition in expanding Biman's fleet and developing a sustainable mixed fleet to improve operational efficiency.

He further expressed the goal of making Biman one of the leading airlines by building the right fleet supported by necessary infrastructure and operational excellence. Millat also urged Biman staff to maintain high professionalism and service standards, stating that the airline's success relies on the dedication and efficiency of its workforce.

Addressing cargo security concerns, Millat mentioned that since June 2017, the European Union has classified cargo from Bangladesh as high-risk. He noted that measures have been taken to address these concerns and sought EU cooperation to lift the restrictions. Recent assessments showed high security scores for Bangladesh's international airports.

The event also featured speeches from other notable figures, including state officials and international diplomats, who remarked on the agreement's potential to enhance Biman's operational capacity and foster closer ties between Bangladesh and the European Union.
