Parbatipur:Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam stated today that approximately Tk 2.63 lakh crore spent by previous regimes over the last 18 years has produced limited results in developing Bangladesh's railway sector. The minister, who also oversees the ministries of road transport, bridges, and shipping, made these remarks during his visit to the Central Locomotive Workshop.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Alam accused corruption and misappropriation of funds of hindering the development of the railway system, resulting in a stagnant state and the loss of assets by Bangladesh Railway (BR). He noted that despite these issues, the government's efforts to improve the sector are ongoing, although progress will take time. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is reportedly working to enhance service standards.
The minister also announced plans to procure 80 locomotives for the railway network, with a proposal for 30 already approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). He highlighted the government's commitment, as outlined in its election manifesto, to prioritize the railway sector, especially given the potential to enhance convenience and passenger-friendliness, particularly in the northern region with its established network.
State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Md Habibur Rashid, Railways Secretary Fahimul Islam, and other railway officials were present during the minister's visit.
