Meherpur: A memorial meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) office today, commemorating the martyrs and injured individuals from the July-August mass uprising. The event was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Sifat Mehnaz. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting saw participation from various notable figures, including Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohi Uddin Ahmed, former members of parliament from the Meherpur constituencies Masud Arun and Amjad Hossain, and other distinguished guests such as Additional Superintendent of Police Kamrul Ahsan and freedom fighter Captain Abdul Malek. District unit Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Taj Uddin Ahmed, along with several leaders from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), also addressed the gathering. The speakers emphasized the importance of ensuring everyone's right to speak, highlighting that the fundamental condition of democracy is the right to vote. They expressed a collective desire to reclaim this right. The anti-di scrimination student movement of July-August was recognized as a significant historical event, with the sacrifices of the martyrs and the injured serving as a source of inspiration for future progress. Among those who spoke at the event were Khandaker Muiz Uddin and Hasnat Zaman, both injured in the uprising, as well as district convener Imtiaz Uddin and member secretary Mojahidul Islam of the anti-discrimination student movement. Shaon Sheikh, the joint convener, also took part in the commemoration. The meeting was attended by leaders of various political parties, families of those injured in the movement, journalists, students, and people from different walks of life, all gathered to pay tribute to the martyrs and reflect on the movement's enduring legacy.
