Sirajganj: A court here today sentenced a man to death and seven others to life term imprisonment for killing a woman and her son in Ullapara upazila of the district in 2019. District Additional and Sessions Judge Mohammad Erfan Ullah handed down the verdict to Hafijul Islam, 40, a resident of Purba Moheshpur village of the upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicts who received life terms were Delowar Hossain alias Dulal, Bachchu Mia, Md Dulal Sarker, Masud Ullah alias Raton, Rahomot Ullah Panna, Md Rafiqul Islam, and Md Bodiuzzaman, all residents of the same village. The court also imposed a fine of Taka 100000 on each of the convicts, with a default sentence of an additional year in jail.
On June 26, 2019, the convicts hacked the woman, Rizia Khatun, and her son, Altab Hossain Mukul, to death in the village over previous enmity, according to the prosecution. Following the murder, Mukul’s wife filed a case accusing a few unnamed individuals at Ullapara Police Station. Police submitted
the charge sheet on October 13, 2020.
Testifying witnesses and examining evidence, the court delivered the verdict in the presence of the convicts, stated Additional Public Prosecutor advocate Md Abu Bakkar Siddique.
