Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced Md Mokbul Hossain to death for the abduction and murder of 10-year-old madrasa student Taohid Islam in South Keraniganj in 2024. The judgment was delivered by Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman in the presence of the convict, who was subsequently sent back to jail with a conviction warrant.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court also sentenced Mokbul to life imprisonment and fined him Taka two lakh for the charges of abduction and demanding ransom. Public prosecutor Ershad Alam George provided details of the sentencing.
Case documents revealed that Taohid, a student at the Najera Department of Rasulpur Jamia Islamia Madrasa and Orphanage in Abdullahpur, South Keraniganj, went missing on his way home after class on February 10, 2024. Mokbul abducted the young boy and demanded a ransom of Taka three lakh from his family. The family complied, leaving the money at the designated location as instructed by the abductor.
Despite receiving the ransom, Mokbul killed Taohid and disposed of his body in a septic tank. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) later arrested Mokbul and recovered Taohid's body. The boy's mother, Tahlima Akter, filed a case on February 11, 2024, and police submitted the charge sheet against Mokbul on July 31. During the trial, 18 witnesses testified before the court.
