Ghatail: Abdullah Al Mamun, a 22-year-old college student from Sholakura village in Ghatail upazila, has become a local sensation by successfully cultivating the American Festival variety of strawberry. His efforts have not only broadened the scope of strawberry farming beyond the northern districts but are also inspiring local youth in Tangail.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mamun initiated his strawberry farming venture in 2022 with a modest experiment involving 100 saplings near his house. The promising results encouraged him to expand into commercial cultivation, and his farm now boasts approximately 10,000 saplings. Each plant in Mamun’s garden produces an average of 300 to 400 grams of strawberries, with the fruits fetching Taka 600 per kilogram in the market.
Mamun anticipates earning around Taka one million from this year’s harvest, after covering all expenses. He explained that saplings can be planted between September and December, with flowering commencing in mid-December and fruit harvest extending from late December to April. Initially skeptical, Mamun’s family is now fully supportive of his agricultural pursuit, and he plans to further expand his farm in the future.
His success story has piqued the interest of many local youths, who are now considering strawberry cultivation as a viable agricultural venture. The high market demand, favorable yield, and attractive pricing make strawberry farming an appealing option for aspiring farmers.
Visitors like college student Sumi Akter and Rubel Mia have been drawn to Mamun’s garden, inspired by the vibrant red fruits and the potential of strawberry farming. Sumi plans to grow strawberries on her rooftop, while Rubel is contemplating starting his own garden after observing Mamun’s success firsthand.
Ghatail Upazila Agriculture Officer Dilshad Jahan noted that strawberries are highly nutritious and valued globally for their unique flavor and aroma. She confirmed that the ideal planting period is from September to October, with harvesting possible until April. The Agriculture Department is prepared to assist any entrepreneurs interested in pursuing strawberry cultivation.
