Putrajaya: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today expressed Malaysia’s concern regarding the significant burden placed on Bangladesh due to its role in hosting a large number of forcibly displaced Rohingyas.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Anwar Ibrahim highlighted this concern during a joint press conference with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in Putrajaya. The Malaysian premier emphasized the importance of securing peace in Myanmar, stressing the need for immediate humanitarian assistance for refugees and victims of natural disasters such as earthquakes.
Anwar Ibrahim praised the Bangladeshi authorities for their proactive efforts in international forums held in New York, Kolkata, and Malaysia. He mentioned that Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, in coordination with counterparts from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, will form a team to visit Myanmar in the coming weeks. This initiative aims to ensure peace and address the atrocities faced by ethnic minorities and the general population of Myanmar.
Discussing the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and Bangladesh, Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged Bangladesh as an important partner. He noted that Bangladeshi workers have significantly contributed to Malaysia’s development, which has led to the introduction of a Multiple Entry Visa facility. This initiative is designed to assist Bangladeshi workers in maintaining family connections and job security.
Anwar Ibrahim also mentioned ongoing collaborations in energy and telecommunications sectors with companies like Petronas and Axiata. He expressed an interest in expanding these partnerships into areas such as Halal industries, STEM education, research, and semiconductor development.
Recognizing Chief Adviser Prof Yunus as a valued friend of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim commended his efforts during Bangladesh’s transition years in ensuring peace and security. He noted that Prof Yunus continues to advance relations in investments, trade, culture, and education between the two countries. Prof Yunus is celebrated for his work on behalf of the underprivileged, including initiatives in microcredit and education at the Albukhary International University in Kedah.
The Malaysian prime minister concluded by reaffirming Malaysia’s commitment to its relationship with Bangladesh, a country he described as having enormous potential. He expressed hope for continued progress and development for the people of Bangladesh, underscoring the friendship between the two nations.
