Washington: US lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, an influential right-wing figure and MAGA acolyte who recently broke with President Donald Trump, announced she is quitting her seat in Congress, prompting him to double down on Saturday on accusations she is a “traitor.” In a video posted online, the 51-year-old Republican congresswoman from Georgia, who was elected in 2020, said on Friday she had “always been despised in Washington DC and never fit in.”

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Greene stated she did not want her supporters and family to endure “a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms.” She announced her resignation with her last day being January 5, 2026.

Trump responded on his Truth Social platform by referring to the lawmaker as Marjorie “Traitor” Brown. He mentioned that for some reason, primarily that he refused to return her never-ending barrage of phone calls, Greene went “BAD.” This unexpected move by Greene indicates a growing split in MAGA world, which is still reacting to strong Democratic victories in recent off-year elections.

The controversy has been fueled by Trump’s inconsistent stance on releasing emails related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Epstein affair seemed to be a point of contention between Trump and Greene, as she referenced it in her resignation speech by standing up for American women who were victims of Epstein’s crimes.

Just this week, Congress passed and the president signed a law requiring government records on Epstein to be made public, after months of Trump trying to suppress the material. Before reversing his stance on the issue, Trump withdrew all support for Greene, calling her a vocal proponent of the release of the Epstein files, and attacked her on his platform.

Greene, a former key political ally of Trump, had been a prominent supporter of his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, advocating for immigrant deportation, gun rights, and expressing skepticism about vaccines. However, her split with Trump has led to speculation about her political future, although she has dismissed rumors of a 2028 presidential bid as “baseless gossip.”

Greene’s resignation comes midway through her third term in the US House of Representatives. She did not disclose her future plans during her resignation announcement. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that her split with Trump made her an even bigger national sensation.

Greene emphasized her loyalty to Trump and her party, claiming she “fought harder than almost any other elected Republican to elect Donald Trump and Republicans,” investing significant personal funds in the effort. She highlighted the importance of loyalty as a “two-way street.”
