Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali today said a fair national election would be possible if law and order can be maintained in next 40 days. Speaking at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh’s best reporting award ceremony at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), he emphasized that the crime situation in Dhaka is currently under control and the upcoming February 12 election is the police’s top priority.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commissioner noted that major challenges were posed by the 2024’s July Movement and the turbulence in 2025. In an effort to ensure neutrality and efficiency in the upcoming elections, an extensive reshuffling of police officers has been implemented. This process was carried out through a lottery system, selecting Officers-in-Charge (OCs) from Dhaka-based officers to avoid any operational difficulties.

On the issue of candidate security, Commissioner Ali stated that protection is being provided based on threat assessments conducted by the Special Branch (SB). He mentioned that several individuals, including election commissioners, have already been assigned gunmen for their safety.

Regarding the high-profile case of the killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, Commissioner Ali disclosed that police are currently examining videos allegedly released by the prime accused, Faisal Karim Masud. He assured that further comments will be made after the review is complete.
