Rajshahi: Integrated efforts of government and non-government entities, along with the use of modern technologies, can strengthen the livestock sector and meet the country’s rising protein demand, experts said. They made the observation while addressing a discussion titled “Role of Livestock to Face the Challenges of Protein Deficiency” in Rajshahi, organized by the Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) to mark its 10th annual general meeting at Simante Nongar Conference Hall.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sabur Ali attended the meeting as chief guest, while BLS President Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder chaired the programme. BLS General Secretary Dr. Hemayatul Islam Arif, members Enamul Haque, Dr. Akhtarul Islam, Dr. Abdul Mannan, and Selina Begum, along with Deputy Director of Dairy and Cattle Development Farm Dr. Ismail Haque, also addressed the gathering.
Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder from the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University emphasized the necessity to develop the livestock sector for food security, self-employment, and poverty reduction. He advocated for the adoption of modern technology, the promotion of high-yielding varieties, and training for farmers to overcome existing challenges. Prof Sarder also underscored that animal resources could be enhanced through improved economic management, research, and specialized knowledge. He urged all stakeholders to contribute to the sector’s development, which is essential for meeting protein requirements and supporting socio-economic progress.
Prof Sarder further suggested large-scale fodder farming to boost livestock production. He identified global economic recession and export bans from the Middle East as significant challenges and stressed the need for producing internationally standard products to maintain competitiveness. He highlighted the importance of cooperative-based modern farm management and ensuring product quality.
Sabur Ali, in his speech, emphasized the potential of the livestock sector, noting that organized initiatives are crucial for its progress and that the Bangladesh Livestock Society has a significant role to play.
