Dhaka: The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has extended legal aid services to a total of 1,27,093 prisoners, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to provide legal assistance to the underserved.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a report published on the NLASO website outlines the organization’s activities from 2009 to March 2025. Initially focused on district-level support, the legal aid initiative expanded to offer services to litigants in higher courts, workers in Dhaka and Chattogram, and prisoners nationwide.
The report details that 28,965 beneficiaries received assistance through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, while 962,385 were supported by 64 District Legal Aid Offices. Additionally, the Workers’ Legal Aid Cell in Dhaka and Chattogram aided 29,274 individuals, and the National Helpline Call Center (16430) served 187,369 people.
The legal aid services are provided at government expense under the ‘Legal Aid Act’, targeting financially indigent and incompetent individuals seeking justice. The NLASO operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
