Dhaka: Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan today emphasized that the language movement, the great Liberation War, the mass uprising of 1969, the anti-dictatorship movement of 1990, and the mass uprising of 2004 are integral historical chapters for the country, complementing each other. “It is never acceptable to pit them against one another. These movements are part of our pride and our identity,” he stated during a discussion event marking Dhaka University Day at the TSC auditorium.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Niaz highlighted that beyond their political significance, there is a collective responsibility to enhance the quality of education. He stressed the importance of maintaining a learning environment and fostering trust and cooperation between teachers and students, honoring those who sacrificed during these movements.

The event began with Dr. Niaz unveiling a magazine cover. He reminisced about the university’s humble beginnings with only 60 teachers and 877 students, contrasting it with its current status as the largest higher education institution in the country, boasting approximately 40,000 students, 2,000 teachers, and 200 associated institutions.

The discussion featured a keynote paper presented by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr. SMA Faiz. Other notable participants included Pro-Vice Chancellor (administration) Professor Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr. M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Dhaka University Alumni Association Convener Shamsuzzaman Dudu.

Earlier in the day, a procession comprising teachers, students, officers, and employees from various university sectors gathered at Smriti Chirantan Chattar. Led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, the colorful procession commenced at 9:45 am. The inaugural ceremony at Payra Square featured flag hoisting, cake cutting, and performances of the national anthem and patriotic songs by the Music Department, including a performance by foreign students.

To commemorate the day, significant structures and roads such as the Vice-Chancellor’s Building, Curzon Hall, Kala Bhaban, and the Student-Teacher Center were illuminated.
