Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has highlighted that the lack of gender sensitivity is not merely an individual psychological issue but rather a reflection of a broader deficit in collective values. He stressed that ensuring the basic values of society and the state would organically lead to gender sensitivity. Swapon made these remarks during the unveiling of the manual titled ‘Gender Sensitivity in Journalism’ at a seminar held at the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) in the capital.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was jointly organized by PIB, Jago Foundation, and Plan International Bangladesh. Swapon emphasized the continuous engagement of both politicians and media professionals with the public. While politicians aim to exercise state power and serve the public, the media’s role is to provide objective news. He also remarked that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government supports the freedom of mass media, as a strong and independent media is crucial for holding political power accountable.

Addressing the challenges posed by mobile journalism and social media, the information minister noted that anyone with a smartphone can now create content, referring to it as a global challenge despite its popularity under the term ‘mojo’ journalism. He reassured that the government does not intend to impose unilateral decisions to address the existing issues in the media sector. The Prime Minister has already met with newspaper owners, and further meetings with editors and television owners are planned. Necessary measures will be taken based on stakeholders’ proposals to resolve these challenges.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana participated as the special guest at the event, while PIB Director General Farooq Wasif chaired the seminar. Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Shabnam Mostari and Country Director of Plan International Bangladesh Kabita Bose also spoke at the event.
