Khulna: Khulna University (KU) and BRAC have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance research, innovation, and sustainable development in coastal regions. The agreement aims to foster the development of climate-resilient technologies to aid coastal farmers.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the MoU was signed by KU Treasurer Prof Dr Md Nurunnabi and BRAC Senior Director Hossain Ishrat Adib. The ceremony, which took place in the presence of KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim, also saw attendance from other key figures including Director of Student Affairs Prof Dr Md Najmus Sadat, Provost of Khan Jahan Ali Hall Prof Dr Md Khasrul Alam, and IQAC Director Prof Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman.
The collaboration will facilitate field-level research activities, integrating KU’s Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT) Discipline with BRAC’s relevant programs. The focus will be on developing and implementing climate-resilient water management and aquaculture technologies in areas affected by climate change. This initiative will encompass both laboratory-based research and field experiments, involving active participation from local communities.
Laboratory assessments under the program will analyze elements such as salinity, arsenic, and iron to enhance the scientific understanding of water management. This will aid in determining water quality and usability, thereby assisting local entrepreneurs and communities in selecting suitable technologies tailored to their specific conditions and needs.
Efforts will also be directed towards mitigating the environmental impact of saline wastewater from conventional reverse osmosis (RO) filters. The partnership aims to innovate improved water management technologies and methods to address this issue.
Additionally, joint research endeavors will focus on developing enhanced fish species and climate-smart, cost-effective aquaculture technologies. These technologies will cater to various coastal environments, particularly benefiting small and marginal farmers.
The MoU highlights the importance of leveraging science, technology, and human resources to bolster the capacity and sustainable livelihoods of vulnerable coastal communities. Stakeholders are optimistic that this agreement will pave the way for new dimensions in research and development cooperation between KU and BRAC, significantly contributing to climate-resilient development in coastal regions.
