Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan today remarked that despite the many prime ministers in Bangladesh’s history, none departed with the same honor and dignity as stateswoman Begum Khaleda Zia. This, he asserted, sets a historic precedent.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khan noted that people nationwide, irrespective of their political affiliations, class, or profession, expressed deep sorrow over Begum Khaleda Zia’s death on December 30. Millions mourned her passing, and the largest Janaza in history was conducted in her honor.
Khan made these comments while serving as the chief guest at a prayer congregation organized by the Nationalist Expatriate Returnee Workers’ Dal at the National Press Club. The event sought forgiveness for the soul of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Expressing prayers for her soul, Khan said, “May the Most Merciful Allah grant her Jannatul Ferdous.” He emphasized that loving and serving the people earns their respect, citing Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia as prime examples.
Khan highlighted Khaleda Zia’s deep love for the nation and its people, noting her efforts to ensure lasting welfare for people across various classes, professions, religions, races, and political beliefs. He emphasized her focus on permanent welfare measures over temporary solutions.
Among her significant contributions was the establishment of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, which created a permanent state structure for expatriates. This structure includes a dedicated ministry, manpower, and budget, recognizing the essential economic contributions expatriates make and their role as global representatives of Bangladesh.
Khan acknowledged the hardships faced by expatriate workers in extreme conditions and stressed the importance of utilizing their earnings for future welfare to prevent them from becoming destitute.
The event was presided over by the convener of the Bangladesh Nationalist Expatriate Returnee Workers’ Dal, Zakir Hossain Kajal. Participants included BNP Chairman’s Advisor and former MP Nazim Uddin Alam, President of Nationalist Workers’ Dal Md. Anwar Hossain, BNP Joint Labour Affairs Secretary Md. Humayun Kabir Khan, General Secretary of Workers’ Dal Nurul Islam Khan Nasim, and Co-President Abul Kalam Azad.
