Kangaroos, llamas added to Chattogram Zoo

Six kangaroos and equal number of llamas have been brought to the Chattogram Zoo from Holland.

 

The new animals arrived at Chittagong Zoo on Friday morning and were made available for viewing to the public at 10am, said Deputy Curator Dr Shahadat Hossain Shuvo.

 

“In addition to increasing the beauty of Chittagong Zoo, new animals are being brought”.

 

Of the newly brought kangaroos, four are female and two are male. Each kangaroo weighs 30 to 35kg, while the llamas each weigh more than 100kg, he added.

 

All of them are physically well now. However, they will be a fifteen-day quarantine under the supervision of the animal supplier.

 

The zoo authority said that an initiative has been undertaken to procure lions, macaws, wildebeests, kangaroos, llamas for Tk 1.69cr through tender. As part of that, kangaroos and llamas were brought to the zoo.

Earlier, a pair of tigers was brought from Africa for Tk 33 lakh to Chittagong Zoo.

 

On 31 July, four rare white tiger cubs were born to the Royal Bengal Tiger couple brought from Africa to Chittagong Zoo.

 

Mammals currently in the zoo include Lion, Male Bear, Zebra, Maya Deer, Chitra Deer, crocodile, Rhesus Monkey, fishing cat, wild Cat, Cheetah, Gandagokul (Himalayan), Bagdas, Gyal, Rabbit, Porcupine, Jackal and more.

 

There is an aviary with peacocks, ostriches, emus, pheasants, teals, chiles, vultures, turkeys, pigeons and lots of pythons.

 

Mohammad Tauhidul Islam, member secretary of the zoo, said that the district administration of Chittagong is working to increase the area of the zoo. Besides, they are working to bring some more animals and birds to Safari Night Park in Jungle Salimpur.
