Dhaka: The government has appointed senior journalist Md Kamal Uddin Mozumder, widely recognized as Kamal Uddin Shabuj, as the new Managing Director and Chief Editor of the state-run news agency, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). This appointment was officially announced through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, under the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Act, 2018. Shabuj’s appointment is on a contractual basis for a period of one year.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the appointment of Kamal Uddin Shabuj will take effect from the date he joins the position. It is contingent on him relinquishing any current employment or professional engagement with other professions or institutions, whether governmental, semi-governmental, or private. Shabuj began his journalism career as a staff reporter at the now-defunct Daily News in 1985, before joining the United News of Bangladesh (UNB) from 1988 to 1991. Subsequently, he joined BSS, where he served for 32 years until his retirement in 2023.
During his career at BSS, Shabuj held various assignments, including covering former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for a decade. His extensive travel as a political, diplomatic, economic, and parliament correspondent brought him into contact with notable global figures, including Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Rajiv Gandhi, and others. Shabuj was also elected twice as President and General Secretary of the Jatiya Press Club.
A lifelong advocate for press freedom and democratic rights, Shabuj frequently comments on television and at international seminars. He is known as a mentor to emerging journalists, offering his expertise through professional lectures and symposiums. Born to Sultan Ahmed Mozumder and Jebun Naher Begum in Banshpara village, Feni district, Shabuj graduated with honors in English literature and language from the University of Chittagong, where he also completed his master’s degree in 1984.
