Dhaka: A court here has granted a five-day police remand for former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder’s son, Md Shahed Ahmmed Majumder. The decision follows his arrest by the Counter Terrorism Unit for alleged involvement in financing the activities of the suspended Awami League.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shahed was apprehended on Saturday night from a house in the Niketon area under Gulshan Thana. Police have filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act. When Shahed was presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court, the police requested a 10-day remand. Shahed’s lawyers opposed this and filed a bail petition. However, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman granted a five-day remand and rejected the bail request.

The case details that a group of activists from the Awami League and its recently banned front organization, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, gathered on a bridge near Dr Fazle Rabbi Park under Gulshan Thana on September 12. They held a procession, chanted slogans against the government, and attempted to damage vehicles to incite panic among the public.

On September 13, Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hussainb of Gulshan Thana filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incident.
