Dhaka: Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged a demonstration on Sunday night by blocking the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and demanded the speedy trial of recent rape incidents. Protesting students, under the banner of ‘Dhorson Birodhi Manch (Anti-Rape Platform),’ began marching toward the Dhaka-Aricha Highway adjacent to the university’s main entrance around 10:45 pm and put up a blockade that lasted for 45 minutes.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ayesha Siddika Meghla, a member of the platform, addressed the gathering and expressed concern over the recent rape incidents across the country. She said, “The recent rape incidents across the country are frightening for us. It is shameful that we have to take to the streets to demand justice for rape. We want the interim government to take visible steps against rape as soon as possible.”

Meher Afroze Shawli, spokesperson for the platform, also spoke at the demonstration, highlighting the increasing number of rape incidents and their impact on society. She stated, “Rape incidents are increasing in the country, which is shameful. These incidents not only deteriorate law and order but also undermine our values. The government must take stern action to restore law and order as early as possible.”
