Dhaka: Speakers at a function here today underscored the need for making joint efforts to uphold the independence gained through the struggle of the July Uprising. They said this at the function featuring discussion and reminiscence on the memory of July Uprising with the participation of writers, artistes, teachers, and journalists of the Cultural Front at the Zahid Hasan Auditorium of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the speakers emphasized that various activities in the cultural arena, including voting rights and freedom of expression during Sheikh Hasina’s long rule, have had a profound impact on the July Movement. Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Mahbub Morshed attended the event, which was moderated by writer Salauddin Shuvra.
Mahbub Morshed, in his speech, pointed out the contrast between Awami fascist writers and cultural circles and those who believe in a democratic social system. He stressed the importance of unity among writers and representatives of civil society. “During the past fascist regime, we have seen that Sheikh Hasina prolonged her power with the cooperation of many in civil society. If we are not united, we will not be able to build the state system for which we fought against fascism in the past,” he stated.
The event also saw contributions from other notable speakers, including writer and organizer Nahid Hasan, novelist and journalist Ehsan Mahmud, human rights activist Rezaur Rahman Lenin, researcher Dipayan Khisa, poet Ferdous Ara Rumi, activist Baki Billah, Mashiul Alam, NCP leader Ariful Islam (Adib), activist Abdul Majid Antar, journalists Poliar Wahid, publisher Saeed Bari, and Masud Zakaria.
A documentary titled “Road to July,” highlighting the anti-fascist movement initiated by writers, artists, teachers, and journalists from 2018 to July 2024, was screened during the event.
