Jashore:Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has become the first university in the country to implement a rooftop solar power system, providing about one-third of its electricity needs and generating additional income by leasing rooftop space.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the university's solar power initiative, launched in June 2023, features a one-megawatt system installed by Superstar Renewable Energy Limited. This system covers approximately 63,000 square feet and generates nearly 100,000 units of electricity monthly, meeting a significant portion of JUST's 300,000-unit monthly demand.
JUST purchases this solar-generated electricity at a rate 26.6 percent lower than the government-fixed tariff, resulting in monthly savings of about Taka 3 lakh. Additionally, the university earns approximately Taka 1.27 lakh per month by leasing rooftops at Taka 2 per square foot. Combined, these efforts contribute to savings and earnings of around Taka 4.27 lakh monthly, with further savings anticipated as more installations are completed.
The university supplies surplus electricity, generated during closures on Thursdays, Fridays, and other holidays, to the national grid, contributing approximately 24,000 to 26,000 units each month. This initiative not only supports the national grid but also enhances educational opportunities for students by providing practical learning and research experiences.
Prof Dr Engineer Imran Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, noted that the solar system offers real-time data, aiding students in their education and research. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Yearul Kabir highlighted plans to cover additional buildings and the Jhenaidah campus with solar panels, aiming to meet up to 40 percent of the university's electricity needs through solar power.
Prof Yearul emphasized the potential for the university to become fully solar-powered, contingent on government incentives, and expressed plans to install solar panels for street lighting as part of a long-term vision to transform JUST into a solar-powered institution.
