Dhaka: The MPs-elect of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have officially taken their oaths as members of both the 13th Parliament and the Constitution Reform Council. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oaths at 12:22 pm, adhering to constitutional requirements, due to the vacancies in the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament. The ceremony was conducted by Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaniz Moula in the oath-taking room of the Jatiya Sangsad.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Jamaat MPs-elect first took their oaths as members of parliament and then separately as members of the Constitution Reform Council, signing both the white forms for parliamentary membership and the light blue forms for CRC membership. Following the ceremony, the newly elected MPs are required to sign the oath book and provide their fingerprints, images, and digital signatures to prepare their digital identity cards.

Independent MPs-elect also participated in the oath-taking as Members of Parliament. Earlier in the day, at 10:43 am, BNP’s MPs-elect took their oaths solely as members of the 13th Parliament, choosing not to participate in the Constitution Reform Council. The BNP representatives have expressed that the provision for such a council must first be incorporated into the Constitution before they can take part. Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, emphasized that the Constitution does not currently recognize a Constitution Reform Council, and any formation of such a body should follow a constitutional amendment first.

Recently, the Election Commission published a gazette listing 297 elected MP candidates. However, the election results for the Chattogram-2 and 4 constituencies were withheld due to court orders, and the election in Sherpur-3 was canceled following the death of a candidate. Notably, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman vacated the Bogura-6 seat, opting to take his oath from Dhaka-17.

In the recent elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 parliamentary seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68. Additionally, the National Citizen Party-NCP won in six constituencies, with independent candidates, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP, Ganaodhikar Parishad, Ganasamhati Andolan, and Khelafat Majlish securing wins in several other constituencies. The BNP-led electoral alliance achieved victory in a total of 212 constituencies, while the Jamaat-led alliance won in 77 constituencies.
