Chittagong: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed concerns today about an “election genocide” if the proposed referendum and national polls are held on the same day. Addressing journalists after arriving at the local parade ground via helicopter, he also warned of a potential crisis if the next election is delayed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman visited the port city to participate in the annual mahfil of Al Jamiatul Islamia Madrasha and a party meeting regarding preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. He emphasized the necessity of a level-playing field to ensure a free and fair election, noting that such conditions are currently absent but urgently needed.

Dr. Rahman clarified that Jamaat-e-Islami is not focusing on local government elections, deeming them unfeasible at present. He stated that the party’s demands will remain prudent and justified, emphasizing that their objective is not merely the victory of Jamaat-e-Islami but the triumph of the people. He criticized the idea of holding a referendum on the same day as the general election, fearing it could lead to what he termed an “election genocide.”

He also highlighted Jamaat-e-Islami’s openness to forming electoral understandings with various parties and forces, even without formal alliances. Dr. Rahman spoke of Bangladesh’s critical phase in history and stressed the need to capitalize on opportunities for positive change, referencing the July 2024 student-mass uprising.

Reiterating the party’s advocacy for a proportional representation (PR) system, Dr. Rahman stated that Jamaat would implement such a system if they come to power in the future. In response to questions about the party’s national agenda, he indicated that they have numerous plans and priorities but are focused on their own goals rather than engaging in negative interactions or responding to others’ provocations.
