Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman emphasized the need for building a corruption-free Bangladesh through collective efforts at a national rally held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. He urged for unity among political entities and the youth to effectively combat corruption, stating, "We will sow the seeds of national unity together by maintaining political etiquette."
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rahman addressed a large gathering, advocating for the youth's involvement in this struggle. He remarked about their past fight against fascism and the current focus on corruption, expressing optimism for victory through united efforts. During the speech, Dr. Rahman experienced a sudden health issue, collapsing twice but managed to conclude his address after receiving first aid.
The rally marked a significant public event for Jamaat-e-Islami since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the previous year's mass uprising. Dr. Rahman expressed gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives during the uprising and reiterated the commitment to repay their debt by continuing the struggle for a new system in Bangladesh.
He highlighted the contributions of martyrs like Abu Sayeed and emphasized political etiquette and unity as foundations for national development. He declared that future Jamaat-e-Islami representatives would refrain from accepting government perks and would maintain transparency and accountability in public service.
Dr. Rahman presented himself as a representative of the entire population, underscoring the inclusive nature of the movement. He called on the younger generation to actively participate in nation-building, emphasizing that the struggle transcends class divisions and involves all societal segments.
The rally featured speeches from several prominent figures, including Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, members from various political and social organizations, and relatives of those martyred in past movements. The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and outlined seven key demands to ensure the upcoming national parliamentary elections are conducted fairly and peacefully. These demands include ensuring a level playing field, trial of mass killings, implementing necessary reforms, and facilitating voting for expatriates.
