Savar: Jahangirnagar University Model United Nations Association (JUMUNA) is set to organise the 8th edition of the “Jahangirnagar Model United Nations Conference 2026” from May 15 to 17 on the campus. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Jahangirnagar University Journalists’ Association office this afternoon, where the organisation’s president Fahmida Sultana Tamanna briefed reporters about the event.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the theme of this year’s conference focuses on ensuring peace, sustainable development, and economic stability through global cooperation for building a climate-resilient world. To provide participants with a realistic diplomatic experience, a total of eight committees have been formed. The committees include the United Nations Security Council, Disarmament and International Security Committee, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, United Nations Human Rights Council, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Programme, Model National Assembly of Bangladesh, and United Nations News Agency (UNNA).
Tamanna added that each committee will deliberate on ongoing global crises, policymaking challenges, and future prospects. The UNSC and UNNA committees will feature open agendas, allowing participants to engage in real-time discussions on current international developments.
The inaugural ceremony will be held on the morning of May 15 at the Youth Development Centre, followed by committee sessions across different departments of the university. Full sessions will continue on May 15 and 16, while the closing and award-giving ceremony will take place at Savar Golf Club on May 17. Cultural programmes have also been scheduled on the evenings of May 15 and 16.
She said around 300 delegates from all 64 districts have already registered, with participation expected to reach 350. The registration deadline for JU students has been extended by three days. Accommodation has been arranged at Gonoshasthaya Kendra for outstation participants, while executive board members will stay at the Youth Development Centre. Transportation facilities will be provided on Shahbagh, Mirpur, and Uttara routes.
Education Minister and State Minister for Education have been invited as guests, alongside the British High Commissioner and other distinguished personalities. The organisers noted that the conference is not merely a debating competition but also a platform to enhance public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking skills among participants.
