Ukhiya: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) today inaugurated a new battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Ukhiya Upazila of Cox’s Bazar to ensure security along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The decision to establish the battalion was driven by the increased sensitivity of the border due to ongoing conflicts in Myanmar.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir Alam raised the flag of the newly formed Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) at the training ground of Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB). A press release from the BGB highlighted the significance of this move in addressing the current border situation.

Speaking to journalists after the inauguration, the home adviser expressed optimism about the Ukhiya battalion’s role in maintaining security along the border. The battalion is tasked with preventing illegal infiltration, smuggling of drugs and contraband goods, curbing cross-border crime, militancy, and terrorist activities, and ensuring the safety of people and property in the frontier areas.

On the same occasion, Jahangir Alam also hoisted flags for the Station Headquarters and Guard Police Battalion in Dhaka, as well as the Dog Squad K-9 Unit and Training Center in Gazipur.

The BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui was present among others at the event, underscoring the importance of this strategic initiative in enhancing border surveillance and activity.
