Chattogram: The 117th Abdul Jabbar’s Balikhela wrestling competition is scheduled to take place on April 25 at the Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram. This traditional event will be accompanied by a three-day Baisakhi fair starting from April 24 and continuing until April 26 at the same venue.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain confirmed the completion of all preparations for the event during a press conference held at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Library Auditorium. The mayor highlighted that Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar initiated Balikhela in 1909 as a means to prepare the youth for the anti-British movement. Over time, it has grown into a significant folk festival in Chattogram.

In tribute to the festival’s founder, the fair committee proposed renaming the Laldighi intersection to Jabbar’s intersection, which has now become Abdul Jabbar Square. This renaming was made official by the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), and a terracotta artwork commemorating Balikhela was unveiled. The square was inaugurated by Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, ensuring the preservation of the festival’s historical significance.

The opening ceremony of the 117th Jabbar’s Balikhela will be led by Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali. City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain will serve as the chief guest, presenting prizes to the winners, while Abu Sufian, MP, will be a special guest at the event.

The Baisakhi Mela, set to begin on April 24, will coincide with Jabbar’s Balikhela, lasting until April 26. Comprehensive security measures have been implemented, including the installation of CCTV cameras, watch towers, drone surveillance, and the presence of SWAT, bomb disposal units, RAB, medical teams, and fire services on standby. The main ring for Balikhela will be located at the Laldighi ground, with over a hundred stalls throughout the city offering a variety of items.

The organizing committee is focused on promoting the tradition of Bali Khela on an international scale and has requested recognition for Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar, as well as the establishment of a Balikhela Academy in Chattogram.
