Kushtia: The 55th Victory Day was celebrated at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia to pay homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War. The day’s events commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah, alongside the university flag raised by Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Yeaqub Ali in front of the administrative building at 10:00 am.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a vibrant procession followed the flag-raising ceremony, led by VC Dr. Nasrullah. The event included a symbolic balloon release and a rally that traversed the main roads of the campus. Participants included Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Yeaqub Ali, Treasurer Professor Dr. Jahangir Alam, Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Manjurul Haque, and a large assembly of teachers, students, officials, and staff.

The parade concluded at ‘Mukto Bangla’, where university authorities and various organizations, such as Zia Parishad, UTAB, Students Against Discrimination, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal IU unit, Chhatra Union IU unit, and the Islamic University Journalists’ Association, among others, placed floral wreaths. This gesture was a mark of respect towards the martyrs of 1971. The ceremony included a moment of silence and a prayer for the fallen heroes after the wreath-laying.

In addition to these commemorations, the programme’s finale featured the laying of a floral wreath at the university’s Foundation Stone in memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. To further mark the Victory Day, the authorities organized a friendly match involving teachers, officers, staff, and residential hall teams.

Earlier in the day, residential halls participated by hoisting the national and hall flags, setting a patriotic tone for the day’s events.
