Italy to Enhance Cooperation with Bangladesh on Immigration and Police Capacity

Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) announced today that Italy has expressed a strong interest in collaborating with Bangladesh to address issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking, as well as to enhance the operational capacity of the Bangladesh Police.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, these remarks were made during a courtesy visit by Italian Ambassador to Dhaka, Antonio Alessandro, at the Home Adviser’s Ministry office at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting focused on several mutual interests, including the upcoming visit of Italian Home Minister Matteo Piantedosi to Bangladesh, scheduled for May 5-6. Other topics discussed included security cooperation, advanced training for police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and strategies to boost the efficiency of law enforcement in maintaining public order and combating transnational crimes.



The Home Affairs Advisor welcomed the Italian Ambassador, emphasizing the strong, enduring friendship between Italy and Bangladesh. He noted the significant economic contributions made by the approximately 250,000 Bangladeshi skilled workers currently employed in Italy. The Adviser expressed optimism that the visit by the Italian Home Minister would further strengthen bilateral relations.



Jahangir reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to exporting manpower through legal avenues complying with international standards and highlighted the country’s stance against illegal immigration. He stated that legal measures would be taken against brokers and human trafficking rings.



The Italian Ambassador conveyed his best wishes to the interim government of Bangladesh and assured full cooperation from the Italian government. He also mentioned that during the Italian Home Minister’s visit, meetings are planned with key figures such as the Chief Adviser to the Interim Government and various other government officials.
