Rome: Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Rakibul Haque announced that more than 200,000 Bangladeshi expatriates residing in Italy are responsible for sending over USD 1.3 billion in remittances annually. This contribution plays a crucial role in bolstering Bangladesh’s economy and enhancing bilateral ties between the two nations.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ambassador Haque made these remarks during the observance of International Migrants Day 2025 and National Expatriates Day 2025 at the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome. The event saw the participation of expatriate professionals, businesspeople, students, and social and political leaders from the Bangladeshi community in Italy.

As part of the commemoration, messages from the Chief Adviser, the Foreign Adviser, the Adviser for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the Home Affairs Adviser were read out. Additionally, a video documentary from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment was screened for attendees.

Ambassador Haque presented a report titled ‘Measures to Expand Regular Migration of Bangladeshis to Italy,’ which was followed by a discussion session involving invited expatriate Bangladeshis. The session provided a platform for participants to share their views and expectations on topics such as regular migration, expatriates’ rights, and the quality of services offered by the embassy.

The programme also addressed the arrangements made for expatriates to participate in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election through postal voting. Embassy officials briefed attendees on voter registration via a postal voting app, ballot issuance, and voting procedures, encouraging expatriates to engage in the electoral process.

In his speech, Ambassador Haque emphasized the significant role played by the large Bangladeshi community in Italy in supporting Bangladesh’s economy through remittances. He also highlighted their contribution to strengthening the friendship and socio-cultural relations between Bangladesh and Italy. The ambassador reaffirmed the embassy’s dedication to improving services for expatriates and outlined measures to protect their rights, dignity, and welfare, along with initiatives planned by the interim government to further assist Bangladeshi expatriates abroad.
