Gaibandha: International Migrants and National Expatriate Day-2025 was celebrated in the district as elsewhere in the country today with a call to protect the rights of migrant workers and their family members. Marking the day, district administration, Technical Training Centre (TTC), and the office of District Employment and Manpower Office, at the directives of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, jointly organized elaborate programs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the celebrations began with a grand rally from the DC office, which concluded at the same venue after parading the main roads of the town. The rally was led by DC Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah, followed by a discussion meeting on the significance of the day held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC). ADC (General) Jadob Sarker chaired the meeting.
DC Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah attended the event as the chief guest, with TTC principal Shamsul Haque, district employment and manpower officer Nesarul Haque, and manager of the Expatriate Welfare Bank Amzad Hossain serving as resource persons. Joya Prosad, senior program manager of Gana Unnayan Kendra, also spoke at the function.
The speakers highlighted that a significant number of people migrate in search of better prospects, aiming to improve their economic status and that of their families. DC Masudur Rahman urged the international community to act on the global compact on safe and regular migration, emphasizing its importance in fostering global peace, prosperity, dignity, and opportunity. He stressed the need to safeguard the rights of migrant workers and their families, recognizing their crucial role in earning remittances and advancing national development.
The event also saw the disbursement of cheques to five expatriates from the district who are going abroad. Additionally, honorary awards were presented to the five highest remittance senders. The function was attended by a large number of government officials, bankers, NGO activists, instructors, and students of the Technical College, alongside journalists from print and electronic media.
