Gaibandha: The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula was observed in the district, as elsewhere across the globe today, with a call to build an obstetric fistula-free country by 2030.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Civil Surgeon’s Office in Gaibandha organized various programs in collaboration with UNFPA Bangladesh-funded LAMB Hospital. This NGO is assisting the government in identifying obstetric fistula patients at the field level and referring them to government hospitals for appropriate treatment.

To mark the day, a rally was held starting from the Civil Surgeon’s Office premises around 10 am, which concluded at the same venue after passing through the main roads of the town. Subsequently, a discussion meeting was conducted at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon’s office, chaired by Dr Rafiquzzaman.

Dr Md Shaheen Akter, a field officer from UNFPA, highlighted the role of LAMB Hospital in addressing the issue of obstetric fistula within the project areas funded by UNFPA Bangladesh’s FRRei project. Earlier, Dr Tahera Akter Moni, a senior consultant at Gaibandha General Hospital, delivered a presentation on obstetric fistula.

Dr Moni shared that since 2012, surgeries have been performed on 172 obstetric fistula patients in the district, who are now leading normal lives. She emphasized the importance of early identification of fistula patients and ensuring their treatment in government hospitals, including Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Dr Rafiquzzaman explained that obstetric fistula is one of the most serious childbirth injuries, resulting from prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical care. It leads to incontinence, chronic health issues, depression, social isolation, and poverty. The program was attended by a large number of health officials, staff, and activists from various NGOs, including GUK, SKS Foundation, and Friendship.
