International Women’s Day Celebrated Nationwide with Focus on Women’s Rights and Empowerment

Dhaka: The International Women’s Day was observed today across the country as elsewhere in the world, with the theme ‘Rights, Equality, Empowerment/Development of Women and Girls’. Different women, social, and political organizations marked the day with a variety of programs.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message on Friday expressing hope that the country’s women will advance in tandem with the developed world to achieve the dream of building a developed Bangladesh. He highlighted the significant contribution of women to the recent students-people movement, noting that women were at the forefront during the mass uprising in July-August, which saw students, workers, and the general public unite for the country’s democratic transformation.



In observance of the day, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs planned extensive programs. The Jatiya Press Club (JPC) organized a discussion at its Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall, chaired by JPC President Hasan Hafiz.



A rickshaw rally was organized by the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) from Banani Beltola area to Karail Ground in the morning, with participation from BLAST members and women’s football team players. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jatiyotabadi Mohila Dal held a colorful rally, starting from the BNP central office and concluding at the same location after traversing various city roads. BNP National Standing Committee member Begum Selima Rahman attended as chief guest, with Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed serving as the main discussant.



The Social Prevention Committee, a coalition of 67 women, human rights, and development organizations, hosted a discussion at Central Shaheed Minar in the capital. Various government and non-government organizations in Rajshahi observed the day, emphasizing a call to end all violence against women, disparity, and discrimination.



In Khulna, the day was celebrated with activities including a rally, women’s entrepreneurs’ fair, and discussions. A Women Entrepreneurs’ Fair was held at the Khulna Collectorate premises.



International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8 every year worldwide since 1975, following the adoption of a United Nations resolution.
