Rangpur: The International Women’s Day 2026 was commemorated with due dignity at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Sunday through a series of colorful programs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a vibrant rally was organized by the Department of Gender and Development Studies at the university. The event was led by BRUR Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md Showkat Ali, who served as the chief guest. The rally commenced from the university campus, traversing the main roads in the surrounding areas.
During the event, Dr. Md Showkat Ali emphasized the necessity of empowering women and ensuring their fair rights to build a just and sustainable society. He remarked on the importance of ensuring safety, dignity, and equal opportunities for women and girls within the family, society, and the state. Dr. Ali also highlighted the crucial role universities must play in establishing women’s rights by fostering awareness and building a knowledge-based society.
The event was attended by distinguished individuals, including the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Dr. Md Nazrul Islam, Head of the Department of Gender and Development Studies Kuntala Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Niyamun Nahar, as well as teachers, students, officials, and employees from various departments.
To mark the occasion, a ‘Commitment Board for Establishing an Equality-Based Society’ was set up in front of the university’s Kabi Hayat Mamud Bhaban. Teachers and students actively engaged with the board, expressing their opinions and commitments towards the rights, protection, and non-discrimination of women, aiming to build a society free from discrimination.
