Khulna: Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University (KU) Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim has emphasized that journalism is a highly challenging and risky profession. He highlighted the necessity of integrity, courage, and commitment to truth for those working in the field of journalism. His remarks were made during a day-long training workshop on 'Data Journalism' held at the university's central library computer lab, where he served as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workshop was organized by the Discipline of Mass Communication and Journalism at Khulna University, in collaboration with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). The VC stressed the importance for journalists to acquire modern technological and data-driven skills along with academic knowledge to address contemporary challenges. He noted the need for investigative work, research-based analysis, and the presentation of accurate information, emphasizing the importance of mathematics, statistics, and computer science knowledge. He also discussed the role of AI and digital tools in enhancing the quality of journalism.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, TIB Executive Director, joined the event virtually as a special guest and underscored the growing significance of data journalism. He described it as one of the most powerful fields in modern media, capable of strengthening democracy and accountability by providing citizens with accurate news based on reliable information. He further stated that information-based reporting at every stage of journalism would enhance public trust in the media.
Professor Sheikh Sharafat Hossain, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, and Mohammad Touhidul Islam, Director of TIB, also addressed the workshop as special guests. The event was chaired by Dr Saramonami Hossain, head of the Mass Communication and Journalism Discipline. Assistant Professor Md Shariful Islam delivered the welcome speech, and TIB Deputy Coordinator Zafar Sadiq conducted the session. A total of 40 students from the discipline participated in the day-long training.
