Dhaka: Education Adviser Professor Dr. CR Abrar today announced that initiatives are being taken to place the Central University Ordinance in the meeting of the council of advisers soon, aiming to provide a legal foundation for merging seven colleges.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ordinance has already received preliminary approval from the Ministry of Public Administration and has been returned to the Ministry of Education. It is expected to be presented to the Cabinet this coming Sunday. Dr. Abrar stated that classes have already commenced for students admitted to Central University, ensuring no disruption to their academic lives.

Dr. Abrar explained that after receiving approval from the council of advisers and the President’s signature, the ordinance will be formally promulgated promptly. The revised draft, incorporating decisions from an inter-ministerial meeting, was forwarded to the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday. Following preliminary approval, it was sent back to the Ministry of Education.

He highlighted that promulgating an ordinance involves approvals from various offices across different ministries, including the law ministry. Typically, this process spans three to six months, but the Ministry of Education has expedited it within one and a half months.

Dr. Abrar mentioned that the ordinance aims to ensure administrative excellence and cater to students’ legitimate demands. It is being prepared for the Advisory Council’s final approval after obtaining policy clearance from the Cabinet Division and vetting from the Legislative Division.

He also noted that the commencement of classes for students admitted in the 2024-25 academic year is a crucial step in maintaining academic continuity. Dr. Abrar stressed that cooperation and professionalism from both teachers and students are vital for the successful implementation of this new educational institution.

He urged vigilance to prevent any disruption to students’ academic lives due to rumors. Dr. Abrar acknowledged two technical issues with the Central University Ordinance: ensuring quality education and enabling students to complete their academic programs within the stipulated time. Efforts are underway to finalize the ordinance by addressing these issues.
