Dhaka: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is scheduled to visit Dhaka in mid-December to lead the Indian delegation at the next round of Bangladesh-India Foreign Office Consultation (FOC), signaling efforts to normalize bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain expressed optimism about the upcoming FOC, stating that it marks the first step towards advancing Dhaka-Delhi relations towards normalcy. Hossain emphasized the importance of pragmatic and realistic approaches in restoring ties to a completely normal state, noting both nations' commitment to repairing their bilateral relations. Hossain acknowledged the challenges present in the current political climate but remained hopeful about overcoming them. He stated that while there may be some hiccups due to significant changes, the aim is to establish a good working relationship for the benefit of both countries. He also addressed the complexities arising from ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's residence in India, suggesting that the process of improving ties would be easier if she were no longer in the neighboring country. Relations between Bangladesh and India have been strained since Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid a student-led uprising and her subsequent stay in India. However, the upcoming FOC presents an opportunity for both countries to address these challenges and move forward. Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin will lead the country's delegation, which traditionally includes senior officials from key ministries such as home, commerce, water resources, and food. During his visit, Misri is expected to pay a courtesy call on Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Advisor. The last annual FOC was held in New Delhi on November 24, 2023, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between the two nations.
