Washington dc: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh as a development partner, expressing its willingness to continue its engagement with the country during the tenure of its democratically elected government.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this commitment was highlighted during meetings between a visiting Bangladesh delegation, led by Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and the IMF on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC. The meetings were held on Friday with the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department Director Krishna Srinivasan and his team in the morning, followed by a session in the afternoon with IMF Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke and his team.

The discussions, characterized by a positive and constructive atmosphere, focused on Bangladesh’s governance approach and key commitments outlined in the BNP’s election manifesto. Specific issues included strategies for increasing revenue collection and reforms in the banking and financial sectors. Both parties reached consensus on most issues, while acknowledging that further discussions are required on some matters.

The finance minister underscored the government’s firm position on issues directly affecting public interest. Despite differing opinions on certain topics, both sides agreed to continue discussions, with the potential for consensus through mutual dialogue and negotiation.

Additionally, the Bangladesh Embassy’s press wing in Washington DC refuted reports in some newspapers alleging that the IMF had suspended the next tranche of its loan due to reform failures, stating that such claims are baseless.
