IGP gets US visa to join UN police summit

Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed has received USA visa to join a 2-day United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2022) scheduled from August 31 to September 1.

The IGP is included in a 6 -member delegation slated to participate at the meeting. Led by Home Minister Asaduzzam Khan the delegation will leave Dhaka for USA on Sunday night, said Sharif Mahmud Apu, Public Relation Officer of the Home Ministry

An official of the home ministry said that the IGP has been granted visa only for the purpose to join the summit.

Other member of the delegation are Joint secretary of public security division of the home ministry Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal, home minister’s personal secretary Mohammad Asaduzzaman, additional DIG Nasian Wazed and Assistant Inspector General Mohammad Masud Alam.

UNCOPS 2022 will bring together ministers, chiefs of police, and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organizations at United Nations Headquarters.

In December last year, the US imposed sanctions on seven former and current officials, including Benazir Ahmed, of Rapid Action Battalion on charge of grave human rights violations.

Benazir served as the director general of Rab before becoming the countryโ€™s police chief.
