Dhaka: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam urged the police force to play a pivotal role in maintaining the country’s law and order, emphasizing the need for officers to perform their duties with honesty and courage, overcoming all fears. Speaking as the chief guest at a welfare meeting organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines, the IGP highlighted the crucial responsibilities of police personnel.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the IGP referred to the Police Reform Commission, part of the reforms initiated by the interim government, which aims to ensure that the police force operates independently, without being influenced by political parties. He stressed that every member of the Bangladesh Police must perform their duties impartially.
The IGP also addressed concerns regarding the July uprising, assuring police members that no punitive actions would be taken against those who did not engage in any wrongdoing during t
he July-August mass uprising. He noted the recent transfers within the police force and urged unit heads to foster unity among new and old members, emphasizing teamwork to uphold the DMP’s reputation.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzad Ali, who presided over the meeting, reiterated the significance of the DMP as the largest unit of the Bangladesh Police. He highlighted Rajarbagh’s historical importance, recalling its role as the starting point of resistance against the Pakistani occupation forces in 1971, a moment of pride for the police.
The DMP Commissioner expressed gratitude to the IGP for attending the welfare meeting and listening to the concerns of DMP members, who presented specific issues and sought the IGP’s intervention. The IGP assured them of his commitment to resolving the problems raised.
The meeting commenced with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the July-August mass uprising, followed by prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.
