Bogura: Liberation War Affairs and Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Pratik, announced that if the ‘Yes’ vote prevails in the upcoming referendum, it will lead to significant changes in the state structure, offering a historic chance to secure people’s rights and freedoms. He emphasized these points while addressing a courtyard meeting aimed at motivating voters and raising public awareness in anticipation of the referendum and the 13th national elections.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was organized by the District Information Office and took place in Phapor Paschimpara under Bogura Sadar upazila. Faruk E Azam, speaking as the chief guest, stated that they are neutral regarding party affiliations and have no influence over voters’ choices in the upcoming elections. He clarified that their sole purpose was to raise awareness about the implications of the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes.

Faruk E Azam highlighted that a victory for the ‘Yes’ vote would dismantle the power of a fascist government to oppress people and carry out extrajudicial killings. He emphasized that these issues would be addressed with the ‘Yes’ vote. Drawing parallels between the 1971 Liberation War and the current political situation, he remarked on the internal struggle faced in 2024 and praised the youth’s resilience against one-party rule.

He elaborated on the potential changes if the ‘Yes’ vote succeeds, noting that the Prime Minister’s term would be limited to 10 years, and the Prime Minister would not simultaneously serve as the head of a party. The judiciary would gain complete independence, with High Court benches established at the divisional level and courts at the upazila level. Furthermore, key constitutional positions would require consensus with the opposition for appointments, and there would be adjustments in the presidential pardon process.

The adviser mentioned that while the interim government cannot execute the referendum’s verdict, constitutional changes made with the people’s mandate would automatically take effect in the future. He urged that the opportunity to guide the state in a positive direction should not be missed.

During the meeting, Faruk E Azam engaged with local attendees, answering questions about the referendum. Bogura Deputy Commissioner Toufikur Rahman, Superintendent of Police Shahadat Hossain, district and police administration officials, civil society representatives, and students were present.
