Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today set June 24 as the deadline for submitting the investigation report regarding the case of six youths who were killed during the July-August mass uprising. Following their deaths, their bodies were reportedly burned to hide the evidence.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the directive was issued by a three-judge panel of the ICT, which is led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The tribunal granted the prosecution’s request for additional time to prepare the report.

Prosecutor Mizanul Islam filed the plea seeking an additional month to complete the probe report. Present in the courtroom during the proceedings were prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud and Faruk Ahammed.

On April 15, the ICT ordered the detention of former additional superintendent of police (crimes and ops) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam, and former detective branch (DB) inspector Md Arafat Hossain in connection with the case.

The prosecution alleges that on August 5, 2024, police in Ashulia shot and killed six youths, subsequently placing their bodies in a police van which was then set on fire. This was allegedly done to create the appearance that the vehicle had been torched by protesters, leading to the deaths.

“Tragically, one of the victims was still alive when the fire was set. Police poured petrol on the van and burned him alive,” Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam stated to reporters earlier.
