Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has scheduled May 7 for delivering an order on framing charges in a significant case involving alleged crimes against humanity during the July Mass Uprising in Mohammadpur. The case implicates 28 individuals, including former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal’s first bench, led by Justice Golam Martuza Majumder, set the date following a hearing on the matter. Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam represented the prosecution during the hearing.
Currently, four of the 28 accused are in custody. These individuals, identified as leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) – Naimul Hasan Russel, Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk, and Fazle Rabbi, were arrested and jailed following the tribunal’s order on January 18, 2026. On the same date, the tribunal issued arrest warrants for the remaining 24 accused.
The prosecution claims that at the behest of the accused, gunfire was directed at innocent students and bystanders during the uprising. This violence resulted in the deaths of nine people, including Mahmudur Rahman Saikat and Farhan Faiyaz, and left many others injured. Prosecutors assert they have compelling evidence, such as video footage, to support these allegations, as stated by then chief prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam on January 18.
Among the notable suspects in the case are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman and former additional DIGs Biplob Kumar Sarker and Proloy Kumar Joarder.
