Sirajganj: The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 of Sirajganj today awarded life-term imprisonment to a man for killing his wife in Rayganj upazila in 2016. The Judge of the tribunal, Salma Khatun, pronounced the verdict in the presence of the convict, Sri Rupkumar Sardar, 31, and fined him Taka one lakh. Son of Gopal Chandra Sardar, Sri Rupkumar hailed from Binodbari village under Rayganj upazila of the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Advocate Masudur Rahman, Public Prosecutor of the tribunal, stated that two of the three accused were present before the court during the pronouncement of the judgment. The court also acquitted another accused, Srimoti Vajel Rani Sardar, as her involvement in the murder was not proven. Police had dropped the name of another accused, Sri Shyamal Chandra Sardar, as he died before the charge sheet was submitted.
The prosecution story revealed that Sri Rupkumar Sardar married Babita Rani Sardar, daughter of Anil Chandra Sardar of Dalil village under Sherpur upazila of Bogura district, in 2016. Shortly after their marriage, Rupkumar began torturing his wife to demand Taka one lakh as dowry. During one instance of such torture, Rupkumar strangulated his wife to death.
The father of the deceased subsequently filed a case with Rayganj Thana, accusing four people, including Rupkumar. The court examined a total of 11 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
