Dhaka:Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that the Sharadiya Durga Puja was celebrated peacefully across Bangladesh, highlighting it as a shining example of religious harmony. The Puja, which is the largest religious festival for the Hindu community, was marked by tight security and enthusiasm nationwide.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, advance preparations were key to maintaining law and order during the celebrations, ensuring they proceeded peacefully and with religious fervor. The home minister expressed optimism that this environment of peace and harmony would continue in the future.
At a press briefing held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ahmed thanked the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, Special Response Battalion (SRB), intelligence agencies, journalists, and others for their roles in ensuring safety during the festival. He noted that while past Durga Puja celebrations had seen unpleasant incidents and attempts to undermine religious harmony, the current government had made significant strides in preventing such actions.
The use of digital applications and modern technology allowed for continuous monitoring, which helped thwart potential sabotage plots. This year, a record 33,851 mandaps hosted celebrations, supported by increased government allocations, including financial aid and rice distribution.
In response to a recent incident involving activists from banned organizations, Ahmed stated that legal actions were underway following video evidence review. He also addressed the situation in Sajek, where tensions arose due to internal conflicts among armed groups, confirming that measures were in place to maintain order.
On the topic of a raid during the Durga Puja holidays, Ahmed mentioned that involved officers faced reassignment, with ongoing legal and departmental proceedings. He reiterated the government's commitment to peace and religious harmony, ensuring all faiths can celebrate freely and safely.
