Dhaka:The ivory-crafted royal throne of the Maharaja of Dinajpur has been preserved at the National Museum in Dhaka, emphasizing the rich historical legacy of the northern district and renewing calls for efforts to protect and display its heritage locally.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the absence of such significant historical artefacts in Dinajpur has left many local residents, especially the younger generation, without the opportunity to experience their own heritage. Ranjit Singh, an agent of the Dinajpur Raj Debottar Estate, confirmed that the historic Dinajpur Rajbari, previously neglected, has seen significant improvements through initiatives led by Deputy Commissioner and Raj Debottar Estate Trustee Md Rafiqul Islam.
The area has been cleaned and made more appealing to visitors, with both local and foreign tourists now visiting regularly. The recent Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations also saw increased enthusiasm among the Hindu community at the site. However, Singh recalled that many structures were once in disrepair, and the area had become a gathering spot for undesirable activities.
Joint efforts by the district administration and the Raj Debottar Estate have led to renovations while preserving the original features of the historic structures. Despite these improvements, former Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Ruhul Amin noted the absence of a comprehensive tourism development program for the Rajbari, which could attract more visitors and generate revenue.
Concerns over illegal occupation of estate land and the encroachment on properties have been raised, with calls for strict action against those responsible. Dinajpur is noted for its historical roots, stretching back centuries, and landmarks such as the Kantajew Temple and Ramsagar lake are significant parts of its royal heritage.
Freedom fighter Md Lokman Hakim expressed sadness at having to travel to Dhaka to see the Maharaja's throne and emphasized the need for a local museum or heritage center in Dinajpur. Dinajpur Zila Parishad Administrator Md Mofazzal Hossain Dulal mentioned government initiatives for preservation and expressed hope for tangible results soon.
